Data exchange: EU and China launch new mechanism

Visit of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to China On 7 December 2023, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of a stronger Europe in the World, travelled to Beijing, China, to participate at the 24th EU-China Summit, hosted by Xi Jinping, President of China, followed by exchanges with Li Qiang, Chinese Prime Minister. The leaders addressed bilateral relations, including trade and investment, climate, environment and digital, as well as human rights. The leaders also discussed international issues and global governance, including Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and other international and regional issues, as well as global challenges.
On Dec. 7, 2023, Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel and Josep Borrell traveled to Beijing for the 24th EU-China Summit. The host was China’s President Xi Jinping. The exchange of data between the EU and China was also a topic of discussion.

The EU and China have held talks for the first time as part of the new mechanism for cross-border data flows. This was announced by the Commission on Wednesday. The aim is to facilitate the exchange of non-personal data for European companies and ensure their compliance with Chinese data laws. The mechanism is based on a political agreement from 2023 and is the first cooperation format of its kind between the EU and China.
