The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has condemned Poland for violating the principle of judicial independence. The court found on Wednesday that Polish judge Waldemar Zurek was wrongly denied standing to challenge his 2018 impeachment. Zurek had previously criticized the Polish government’s judicial reforms. It is up to Poland’s judiciary to decide how to implement the ECJ ruling. But the EU could also force this by court decision.
