While energy prices are rising sharply, German consumers will at least be relieved when it comes to electricity: The surcharge to promote green electricity will fall by a good 40 percent in 2022, partly thanks to a government subsidy worth billions, government and industry representatives said on Thursday. The so-called EEG levy, which all consumers have to pay, will fall to just over 3.7 cents per kilowatt hour from the current 6.5 cents. In the past, the levy accounted for about a quarter of the total electricity price for private households. Many industrial companies will also benefit from the reduction.
