The government under Prime Minister François Bayrou wants to reduce the national deficit with its controversial budget plan.

The dispute over the budget led to the fall of the government in France last year. Now the budget has been passed – and Prime Minister Bayrou has survived two votes of no confidence.

After months of dispute, France’s parliament has passed the overdue budget for the current year. A majority of 219 to 107 senators voted in favor of the bill in the upper house.
