A difference of opinion between the Federal Chancellery and the Foreign Ministry is said to be one reason why Germany is blocking further sanctions against Russia.

According to diplomats, new, stricter EU sanctions against Russia have been thwarted by the German government. This is apparently also due to a dispute between the Chancellery and the Foreign Ministry.

The EU countries have been unable to agree on a 14th package of sanctions against Russia due to a blockade by Germany. Despite the removal of a clause, Berlin did not want to agree to the package, diplomats told Reuters news agency on Wednesday.
