ECB President Christine Lagarde sees opportunities for a stronger role for the euro in the upheaval of the world order away from international cooperation and towards more protectionism. Multilateral cooperation has been replaced by zero-sum approach and bilateral power games. „There is uncertainty even about the supremacy of the US dollar as the cornerstone of the system,“ said Lagarde at an event at the Hertie School in Berlin on Monday. If Europe acts wisely, Lagarde believes that new opportunities could arise. With a share of around 20 percent of foreign exchange reserves, the euro is currently the second most important reserve currency in the world after the dollar, which accounts for 58 percent.
