The EU wants to strengthen the „strategic partnership“ with South Africa at the summit in Cape Town. The plan is more than just a sign of solidarity with the country, which is particularly affected by the Trump administration’s cuts to USAID.

Council President António Costa and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Cape Town on Thursday for an EU-South Africa summit with President Cyril Ramaphosa. The „special geopolitical context“ has made this first summit with South Africa since 2018 more urgent than ever, said a high-ranking EU diplomat with a view to Donald Trump’s return to the White House. It was a personal concern of Council President Costa to intensify relations with partners around the world and create a global network.
