With the inclusion of the maritime sector in the ETS, shipping companies have had to pay the European carbon price for the voyages of ocean-going and inland waterway vessels of 5,000 gross tons or more since the beginning of the year.

European shipping has been part of the European emissions trading system since the beginning of the year. Initially, there were concerns from the industry that shipping companies could avoid EU ports and continue unchecked emissions. It is now apparent that shipping companies are benefiting from the price increases.

The four largest European shipping companies Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd pass on the carbon price to their customers to a greater extent than the shipping companies themselves have to pay for it. This is the result of an investigation by the Brussels-based environmental umbrella organization Transport and Environment (T&E).
