E-cigarettes are to be placed on an equal footing with traditional tobacco products via minimum tax rates.

The Commission’s work program does not include the Tobacco Tax Directive. Nevertheless, 15 member states are pressing Ursula von der Leyen to present a proposal as soon as possible. Among the signatories is Germany’s new Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil.

Although the Tobacco Tax Directive does not appear in the European Commission’s current work program, 15 EU member states are urging Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to move forward quickly with a proposal. The letter, obtained by Table.Briefings, calls for the introduction of minimum tax rates on tobacco products and e-cigarettes. It was signed by a majority of EU member states, including Germany’s new Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil (SPD).
