The coalition agreement between the CDU, CSU and SPD has been finalized. This is basically good news – for Germany and for Europe: after the elections, the Federal Republic will be able to act again. And yet, as a European politician, I am disillusioned when I open this document. Europe? You really have to look for it with a magnifying glass – it’s the very last chapter in the treaty – and it’s categorized under foreign policy. That alone shows how important the issue is to the coalition partners. And that is a serious mistake.
