Viktor Orbán’s invitation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Hungary is nothing less than an open provocation. Netanyahu, who is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity, was to be received in Budapest on Wednesday – in an EU member state that is itself a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC. This means that Hungary is obliged to extradite Netanyahu to The Hague like any other state party. The fact that Hungary is ignoring this arrest warrant is a blatant breach of the law and an open disregard for international criminal justice.
