AI liability: Who pays for potential damages if an AI makes a mistake?


By withdrawing its proposal for an AI Liability Directive (AILD), the EU Commission has, according to some critics, left key questions regarding liability along the AI value chain unresolved. A recent report by legal scholar Beatriz Botero Arcila, published with the support of the non-profit organization Mozilla, shows how complex value chains in AI development make it difficult to assign responsibility. A robust liability regime is therefore necessary.
