A ruling is imminent in the legal dispute between the EU Commission and the New York Times over the publication of text messages from the head of the German government Ursula von der Leyen. On Wednesday, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg will rule on whether the text messages are to be classified as documents and must be made accessible to the public. The text messages in question concern contacts between von der Leyen and the head of the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Alfred Bourla. They exchanged several text messages at the height of the coronavirus crisis in 2021. According to the New York Times, this could have been about vaccine contracts worth billions. The EU Commission does not want to release the text messages.
