The goal is clear: the new German government plans to adopt a unified China policy coordinated with its European partners. Institutionally, the chances of this are not bad, as the Chancellor’s Office, Foreign Ministry and Economy Ministry are three powerhouses in the hands of the Christian Democrats, all crucial for shaping the country’s China policy. In addition, establishing a national security council is expected to improve coordination.
