The Communist Party leadership quietly dropped the slogan Made in China 2025 a few years ago. But the strategy remains the same. China has achieved tremendous success in modernizing the country. In some key industries, the leadership has exceeded its targets. In others, the picture is mixed.

China’s President Xi Jinping once again used his New Year’s address to highlight his own industrial policy successes, such as the record sales of electric cars. However, one milestone was absent from both the New Year’s speech and other recent announcements: Made in China 2025.
