While the issue hardly played a role in the election campaign, the coalition contract between the CDU/CSU and SPD devotes eight out of 144 pages to energy and climate. It states that the next federal government will essentially continue the course of its predecessors, committing itself to the goals of net zero and the European Green Deal. However, the coalition government places greater emphasis on market instruments, the reduction of bureaucracy and technical solutions such as CCS.
