One month before the Bonn SBSTA conference, the new climate targets of smaller countries such as Moldova, Kenya and Zambia are gradually arriving at the UN. At the same time, however, it is becoming clear that without a fundamental tightening of these central instruments of national climate policies, they will fall far short of the requirements of global climate protection. Three months after their official deadline and four months before their unofficial deadline, the most important climate policy decision of 2025 is in danger of failing to present climate plans from the 193 UN member states that open up realistic prospects of meeting the Paris climate targets by 2035. A recent study confirms that most of the so-called NDCs of the most important emitters fall far short of expectations.
