The European Commission wants to strengthen local farmers by introducing more mirror clauses in international trade. According to the recently published „vision paper,“ it wants to align standards for imported products, particularly with regard to animal welfare and pesticides, with rules within the EU. Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen is thus trying to make the Brussels authority’s free trade agenda palatable to farmers. „We need a level playing field – that is one of the farmers’ demands,“ he emphasized in January.
