Berlin waters Buildings Directive down

Building refurbishment is one way of achieving energy-saving targets.

Shortly before the decisive trilogue in Brussels, the German government is attempting to further weaken the climate ambitions in the Buildings Directive. One day before the decisive negotiations, many permanent representatives also spoke out in favor of weaker energy-saving targets.

On the home stretch to the Buildings Directive, the German government wants to fall behind the Council’s general approach on several points. The member states had already adopted it in October 2022. The current German push revolves around the renovation pathways and the energy-saving targets for 2030, 2040, and 2050.
