Investments: Infrastructure owners fear egalitarianism

Grid expansion alone is expected to cost around EUR 500 billion by 2030. The Commission also wants to use private capital for this.

Financial investors are pushing for EU-wide harmonization of regulation in the energy industry. Harmonization is of fundamental importance in order to scale investments, said Craig Douglas, Partner at the Berlin-based venture capital investment company World Fund, at the EU Commission’s Investors Dialogue on Energy on Thursday. He cited the regulation of electricity grid fees as an example: „There is a nice summary of the grid fee system in Europe – it’s 700 pages long!“ The fees determine how interest is paid on the capital invested in the expansion of the infrastructure.
