In most countries and economies, socio-economic disparities in literacy have increased. This was the result of an OECD study.

The number of adults with very low reading skills has risen in around half of the OECD industrialized countries. Although Germany performs better than the average, it has a problem with one score in particular.

The literacy and numeracy skills of adults in Europe have mainly declined or stagnated over the past ten years. Differences have widened, especially in reading skills. This is the result of the second international survey on adult skills (PIAAC), which was published on Tuesday by the OECD and co-financed by the European Commission.
