This adorable cat gained tragic fame in recent days within the Chinese online community. Little Wukong – named after the Monkey King in the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West – recently passed away, sparking an outpouring of condolences and speculation. Wukong had already become famous several months earlier. At that time, blogger Zhao Su discovered him during a cycling trip in a remote area of the Xinjiang autonomous region. Zhao continued his journey with the cat in tow, documenting their shared travels – and gained tens of thousands of followers. At the end of April, Zhao found Wukong dead on a street near Xinjiang’s capital, Ürümqi. The cause of Wukong’s death remains unclear, with some speculating that he may have been poisoned. Even state-run media like Beijing Daily discussed the story, calling for more humanity and less wild online speculation in its usual solemn tone: „If everyone contributes a little to animal protection and the cleaning up of the internet, the civilizational level of our society will improve.“
